    WHAT IS THE BASIC EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATIONS?

    Graduation from any university including open universities recognized by the UGC. Indian students holding degree from a foreign university should ensure that their degree is duly accredited or recognized by UGC.

    WHICH STREAM SHOULD ONE CHOOSE FOR GRADUATION TO APPLY FOR CIVIL SERVICES EXAM?
    Candidates from all streams can apply for Civil Services exam. After graduation and clearing Prelim exam one can choose any given optional subject for UPSC Mains, whether one has studied it for graduation or not.
    WHEN DOES THE UPSC NOTIFY THE VACANCIES AND SCHEDULE OF THE EXAMINATION?
    Always look for the latest notification of UPSC to ascertain last date for application and schedule of examination.
    WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS TO APPEAR FOR IAS/IPS EXAMINATION?
    Age: At least 21 years old on the 1st of August of the year in which they aspire to give the Exam. See latest UPSC notification for prescribed upper age limit, age relaxation etc.
    CAN ONE WRITE DIFFERENT PAPERS OF CIVIL SERVICES MAIN EXAM IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES?
    No. One has the option to write your answers either in English or in any one of the languages included in the Eighth schedule to the Constitution.
    IF ONE CANNOT SPEAK IN ENGLISH FLUENTLY, IS IT POSSIBLE TO WRITE THE CIVIL SERVICES MAIN EXAM IN ENGLISH AND TAKE THE INTERVIEW IN HINDI OR IN ANY OTHER INDIAN LANGUAGE?

    See UPSC latest notification in this regard. UPSC generally gives options to:

    1. If one opts to write the Main Exam in English, he/she may choose as the medium for interview either English or Hindi or any other Indian language opted by him/her for the compulsory Indian language paper in the written Main Exam. But, he/she is exempted from writing compulsory Indian language paper; he/she will have to choose either English or Hindi as the medium for interview.
    2. If a person opts for Indian language as the medium for the written part of the Civil Services Main Exam, he/she can choose either the same Indian language or English or Hindi as the medium for the interview.

    IF ONE APPLIES FOR THE CIVIL SERVICES PRELIMS EXAM BUT DOES NOT APPEAR IN ANY PAPER WILL IT BE COUNTED AS AN ATTEMPT?
    No. An attempt will be counted only if one has appeared in at least one paper. See latest UPSC notification
    IS THERE ANY RESTRICTION ON NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS IN CIVIL SERVICES EXAM?

    Yes:

    (i). Number of attempts for General category candidates is 6.

    (ii). Number of attempts for OBC is 9.

    (iii). There is no restriction on number of attempts for SC/ST category.

    In case of physically handicapped belonging to General category are eligible for 9 attempts.

    IF A CANDIDATE BELONGS TO A COMMUNITY INCLUDED IN THE OBC LIST OF STATES BUT NOT IN THE CENTRAL LIST OF OBCS IS HE ELIGIBLE FOR AGE RELAXATION, RESERVATION ETC. FOR CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS?
    No. Only candidates belonging to communities which are included in the Central list of OBCs and are not in the ‘creamy layer’ category are eligible for such concessions. See notification pertaining to the concerned state.
